1. The World’s Oceans
The world’s major oceans are:
- Pacific Ocean – largest and deepest.
- Atlantic Ocean – “S” shaped, busy for trade.
- Indian Ocean – only ocean named after a country.
- Southern Ocean – around Antarctica.
- Arctic Ocean – smallest, around North Pole.
PAISA” → P A I S A (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic)
2. What are Ocean Currents?
Ocean currents are large-scale movements of ocean water in a particular direction,
like rivers flowing in the sea.
They can be:
They can be:
- Warm currents – carry warm water from equatorial to higher latitudes.
- Cold currents – carry cold water from polar to lower latitudes.
3. Important Warm & Cold Currents (Exam Focus)
Atlantic Ocean:
- Warm – Gulf Stream (from Gulf of Mexico to Europe).
- Cold – Labrador Current (from Arctic towards Newfoundland).
- Warm – Kuroshio Current (near Japan).
- Cold – Peru / Humboldt Current (along west coast of South America).
Short:
Gulf Stream = warm (Atlantic)
Labrador = cold (Atlantic)
Kuroshio = warm (Pacific)
Peru/Humboldt = cold (Pacific)
4. Effects of Ocean Currents
- Influence the climate of coastal areas (warm currents → warmer climate, cold → cooler).
- Affect fishing grounds – where warm and cold currents meet → very rich in fish (e.g., Grand Banks near Newfoundland).
- Important for navigation and shipping routes.
5. What are Tides?
Tides are the periodic rise and fall of sea level caused mainly by the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun.
6. High Tide & Low Tide
- High tide – sea level rises to its highest.
- Low tide – sea level falls to its lowest.
- Tides usually occur twice a day at most places.
7. Spring Tide & Neap Tide
Spring Tide
- Occurs when Sun, Moon and Earth are in a straight line (during Full Moon and New Moon).
- Gravitational pull is strongest → highest high tides & lowest low tides.
- Occurs when Sun, Moon and Earth form a right angle (First Quarter & Last Quarter).
- Gravitational pull partly cancels → lowest high tides & highest low tides.
Neap tide =
8. Importance of Tides
- Help in navigation – ships use high tide to enter and leave shallow harbours.
- Important for fishing – many fish follow tidal movements.
- Used to generate tidal energy in some places.
